After two years of working on my second book it’s so exciting to see Dream Decor starting to make it’s way out into the world! The book officially publishes on May 17th but I’ve heard that Amazon have already stared shipping their copies, so if you’d like to order a copy you can do so right now via Amazon USA or Amazon UK. In the first of a series of sneak peeks at the book, I’m kicking off with a look at my old London apartment. It’s crazy to think this photoshoot took place well over a year ago and I’m now living in NYC. A trip down memory lane, for sure! It’s funny to see the spaces in the book because my aesthetic has definitely evolved from when I decorated the apartment almost two years ago. The space above was my old home office – I loved that pool blue couch so freakin’ much! The apartment was a rental that we only lived in for a year so I used Command 3M strips to hang a gallery wall of art as a way to bring color and personality to the space without damaging the walls or having to spend too much money. In the bedroom, I hung art by Japanese illustrator Hiroyuki Izutsu to bring whimsy and charm to the space. I also miss those bedside tables that were inspired by a 1940’s sideboard seen at a flea market in Paris. In the living room I used flashes of pattern and accent color to add visual interest to the classic monochromatic scheme. A jet-black feature wall helped to enlarge the space, while the pared back, neutral furniture – such as the gorgeous white linen Bemz sofa cover that totally elevated my IKEA couch – allowed for mix and match cushions to be introduced.I hung two pieces of abstract art above the white linen sofa as a point of reference for my chosen accent colors. The black and white foundation across the fundamental elements of the room allowed me the freedom to reference different colors from the statement artwork. I layered these accents into the room across cushions, vases and decorative accessories. I find this to be a great approach to decorating because it keeps the schemes flexible enough to quickly switch up by swapping out smaller, transitional pieces in new accent colors. The light in this room was always so soft and gentle – in fact, it was it was one of the reasons I signed the lease. Truth be told, I spent so much of my final year living in the UK traveling for business (and, ironically, shooting this book!) that I didn’t get to spend as much time in this space as I would have liked. It’s really fun to write this post and relive the room! The living space in the apartment was narrow so I painted the small far wall in a matte jet black to visually lengthen the space. By keeping the other walls white it meant the space still felt light and bright.I wallpapered the dining nook in with removable ‘confetti’ wallpaper from Scandinavia. The statement yellow artwork reference the irregular circular shapes of the wallpaper behind. I’ll be sharing more sneak peeks from my new Dream Decor here on the blog soon!
