Seriously, where did summer go this year?! It literally flew past and now autumn is knocking on the door. Although summer has been great I’m almost always ready to usher in a new season, and that’s definitely true of how I feel right now. And what better way to celebrate the close of one season and the opening door to another than throwing a party in honor of the seasonal change? My friends at Stella Artois asked me to partner with them to ‘host one to remember’ so I embraced the coming autumnal season and threw a fall picnic party! We often think of picnics as a summer activity but in reality autumn is the perfect season for picnics because of the more temperate climate. The benefits of a fall picnic vs. a summer one include: the food stays fresher for longer; there are less pesky bugs; fashion layering so you can look stylish and not sweaty! I could go on…! After the jump I’m sharing my tips for how to dress for and style a fall picnic to make the party one to remember. Here’s to fall, friends!
Aside from the delicious food and beverages, what makes a picnic memorable is how comfortable it is. Whether you’re hosting your fall picnic in a backyard or park, be sure to bring a series of soft blankets to lay over the grass. I picked this super soft lambswool blanket because I liked the rich autumnal colors in it, but there’s no right or wrong. Go classic with a plaid pattern or playful and graphic with, say, a repeating fruit print pattern. Then, with your blanket in place place a series of throw pillows around the edge of it. This gives your guests a comfortable place to sit and relax while enjoying the food and drink. I bought a series of throw pillows, in co-ordinating colors seen in the blanket, for under $5 so that it wouldn’t matter if they got grass stains etc. on them. After all, you want to be able to relax and not worry about ruining anything!
Take wooden chopping boards and serving platters and fill them with cheeses, crackers, fruit, cured meats and colorful salads to create a spread of food that looks as good as it tastes. Cheese is also a wonderful accompaniment to the flavor of Stella Artois, too.
Anyone for a drink? Using proper glassware for an adults fall picnic is another subtle way to elevate the party as it’s more sophisticated than throwaway paper products.
When it comes to dressing for a fall picnic I like to take my cues from the rich colors of the forthcoming season and the fading hues of the outgoing one. Think: deep cherry colored chinos to reflect the intense hues of the fall leaves paired with a faded green bomber jacket as a nod to the disappearing greenery that comes as summer turns to autumn. Wearing a washed pink shirt adds a smarter edge to the casual feel of the bomber jacket.
