Of course, we could have chosen to decorate the entirety of the beach house head-to-toe in the classic beach house palette of blue and white. After all, I adore blue in any and all forms! Plus, it’s proven to look fantastic in coastal properties as the stunning Mark Sikes designed Coastal Living Idea House showed this past summer. While much of the downstairs of the beach house will indeed take on this classic and much loved palette (hurrah!), we decided to mix up the pace and design direction upstairs with a different approach. When it came to the master bedroom we knew we wanted to create a space that was cozy and cocooning so that we would enjoy spending time there in both the summer and winter months. My inspiration for the beach house bedroom design came from the first piece I fell in love with for the room: the Acton tufted club chair in a stunning forest green velvet.
I walked into my first beach house bedroom design meeting with Sally from The Studio at One Kings Lane and immediately mentioned the design of Soho House properties as a reference point for the master bedroom design direction. The Acton tufted club chair was the perfect piece to kick start this design direction as the rich velvet is often seen in the upholstery across their properties. From there we designed the room using the chairs as the jumping off point: they inspired the gorgeous Goodwin Green paint color for the walls, while the antiqued brass swing arm sconces were chosen to add contrast to the deep green walls behind the bed. A vintage Oushak rug will anchor the striped upholstered bed to the iron bedside tables, which coupled with the figure drawings should help to give a gently masculine feel to the room. Despite making a pointed steer away from the blue and white palette that will be seen downstairs I’m still keen to continue notes of the beach house locale through the upstairs of the property, so we decided to add a few sophisticated drawings of boats and vintage maritime finds to tick that box. I’m super excited to see how this space comes together and can’t wait to share it with you all once it’s completed! More design sneak peeks from the beach house to come soon.
